Transfer Station Recycling Explained
The following is an outline of how to prepare your Transfer Station recycling. Some recyclable materials require preparation before they can be placed into our recycling bins. By following these instructions for each recyclable product below, you are insuring that your recyclable items are processed appropriately and safely.
ALUMINUM & TIN CANS
- Rinsed clean with paper labels removed
- No Aerosol cans
- No Aluminum Foil with food (please place this into the garbage bin)
- No plastic bags of any sort. Please empty your materials into the bin and put the plastic bag that you used to transport you commodity into the garbage can beside the bin.
GLASS BOTTLES AND JARS
- All color glass is accepted.
- Lids/corks/tops removed.
- Rinsed clean.
- Mirrors and window glass are permitted.
- No plastic bags of any sort. Please empty your materials into the bin and put the plastic bag that you used to transport you commodity into the garbage can beside the bin.
- No cardboard cases that bottles come in. (these generally belong in the Paper bin)
MIXED WASTE PAPER
- Newspaper.
- Junk mail, Magazines catalogs, office paper and paper cartons. (cereal boxes etc which must be flattened)
- No plastic coated paper, milk cartons or food packaging. (these go into the garbage)
- No food on paper.
- No plastic bags of any sort. Please empty your materials into the bin and put the plastic bag that you used to transport you commodity into the garbage can beside the bin.
PLASTIC
- Bottles of any color.
- Milk jugs.
- Any plastic containers used for food or other products
- Must be rinsed of all residues.
- All must be flattened and the lid reattached, to the greatest extent possible in order to save space.
CORRUGATED CARDBOARD
- Broken down and flattened (not stepped on).
- No waxed cardboard.

None recyclable items are subject to 3.6% State Refuse Tax and 3.15% Whatcom County Excise Tax.
